Why choose a Murphy bed?

Full sleeping comfort in a folding bed

Modern wall beds can, depending on the model, offer the same sleeping comfort as a fixed bed, but do not take up any floor space during the day. The mattress stays in place and does not need to be rolled up or removed. The bedding can also be left on, allowing you to step straight into a fully made bed in the evening.

That makes this type of bed suitable for anyone with a spare room, home office and wants to combine the sleeping area into one room. A fold-away guest bed keeps the room free for other activities during the day, whilst at night you have a comfortable and fully-fledged place to sleep. This makes the space feel larger and calmer, without compromising on sleep quality.

How do you choose between a vertical and horizontal wall bed?

The correct unfolding direction mainly depends on the shape and layout of the room. A vertical foldaway bed folds forward and takes up relatively little wall width, but does require sufficient free floor space in front of the cabinet equal to the mattress length. This model is often chosen because you can easily get out of bed on both sides.

A horizontal foldaway bed folds out sideways and uses more space along the wall, but less depth in the room. This makes this version well-suited to a narrow guest room or study where there is little free space available in front of the cabinet.

By comparing both variants on wall width, floor depth and frequency of use, you determine which foldaway bed best suits your situation.

What sizes and models are available?

At Easy Living you will find both single and double wall beds. Depending on the model, bed widths of approximately 85 to 180 cm are available, with various intermediate sizes. Most beds have a length of 200 cm, but there are also extra-long versions of 210 cm. This allows you to tailor the bed size to the number of sleepers, the desired sleeping comfort, and the available space.

For multi-purpose spaces there are models with an integrated bench, table or desk. This allows you to use the same space as a sitting or working area during the day and as a comfortable place to sleep at night. The range also includes fold-down bunk beds, with which you create two sleeping places without them permanently taking up floor space.

Fold-away beds with extra storage space

Some models combine the sleeping area with an integrated wardrobe, so you gain storage space without needing extra furniture. This is also known as a folding bed in cupboard mentioned and in many cases offers a practical solution. Which folding bed suits this depends on the available wall space and your storage needs.

What materials and quality can you expect?

The materials and construction used vary by model. Many folding beds feature a metal framework, an integrated slatted base, stable legs and a gas-spring mechanism. This allows the bed to open and close smoothly and in a controlled manner, while the slatted base supports the mattress. In some models, fastening straps keep the mattress in place when folding it away.

Quality is additionally determined by the sturdiness of the cabinet construction, the hinge and spring mechanism, the wall mounting and the chosen mattress.

Which mattress is suitable for a folding bed?

For folding beds, cold foam, pocket sprung, bonnell sprung and polyether mattresses are available, among others. A suitable mattress for a fold-away bed provides sufficient support, but must not be too thick. Otherwise, the bed might no longer close properly. We also advise against latex mattresses or memory foam / tempur mattresses. These fillings cannot cope well with standing upright and will sag, which is of course a great shame.

The maximum mattress thickness varies per model and cabinet depth, but is often between 16 and 20 cm. If you want to be able to fold the bed away with the duvet included, a thinner mattress may be more practical. Various comfortable options are available within this thickness range, including high-quality cold foam mattresses.

What should you look out for when buying a wall bed?

When buying a fold-down bed, first pay attention to the available wall and floor space. Measure not only the cabinet, but also check how much space the bed takes up when folded out. Then, determine whether a vertical or horizontal model best suits the room's layout and choose a bed size that matches the number of sleepers.

In addition, consider the frequency of use, ease of operation and the mattress. For daily use, a sturdy construction, a smooth mechanism and a supportive mattress are extra important. Also check which mattress thickness is suitable, and whether the bed can be folded away with bedding on it.

Free delivery and installation by our own team
